Technology
The basis of technology was to make our lives easier. A noble idea isn't it? Take a look at the evolution of smartphones, essentially the mobile phone, for example.
When Alexander Bell made the first ever long-distance call to Ontario, Canada from his office at Brantford, a whole 6 miles between them on the 10th August 1876, it was ground-breaking. It's scary to see how much has changed since. Now, not only you can easily make a call from Canada to Malaysia easily, you can do it for free via applications such as Viber or Skype with the help of the internet, which, is another evolution in technology for mankind.
But, has technology been perfect for us? I'm not saying that technology only brings harm to us. I'm saying, without sufficient control, we wont't be in control our lives any more. It'll be much like a scene from Terminators or I,Robot , where further evolution in technology like the creation of robots will dictate and rule over our lives.
Step into a normal restaurant, chances are the first thing you'll see isn't a group of people conducting their conversations or enjoying their meal, it'll be them having their eyes glued onto the screens of their phones or taking 10 pictures of their food in quest for the perfect one to upload into Instagram. It's sad really. All these technology. Only for us to abuse its power. I'm no exception to it. That's why I'm going to try something for a period, of lets say, 14 days. What I'm going to do is to minimize my usage of social medias. That includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr.
I did a slight rendition of it this morning. Where I didn't look at my phone until we reach our destinations, which usually I'm guilty off. And to a certain extent, it worked. I felt good. Happy even. Then on the way back, I did what I usually did. Not only I suffered a massive headache, but I felt like I was wasting my time with useless feeds and knowledge I will probably never use. Tomorrow onwards, I'll only use social media(s) when I'm taking a break from study or work. Other than that, it is inadmissable. We have to stop looking down at our phones for a change, and start looking at the world.. "We see what we want to see." There are times when it cringes me when people would rather take a video of a concert only to never look at it again instead of enjoying the real thing right in front of them. Sure, take a couple of photos, then put the damn phone back into your pocket.
Maybe in 2 weeks from now, I'll feel better eh? Anyone want to tag along with me on this crazy idea? With the extra time I have, I could do so many things with it. Read a book. Write a book. Experience the world. Experiences place where I could not possibly go at this moment. Make some friends. So many "right" things instead of looking at the screen. So many...
We're too obsessed with trying to cement a credible presence "on-line" that we forget about the moment you're in right now. Just stop, breathe, and take a long look of where you are now. Because that's the real you. Not the person "on-line." Who knows, maybe I'll enjoy it so much that I will ultimately deactivate some of the useless accounts that I have. Time will show.
